What started as a coffee house has grown into the premiere gay and lesbian lounge and restaurant. Beautiful outdoor space mixes with covered cabanas and indoor lounge areas to make a destination that will please everyone in the group. The bartenders mix a good drink and the menu covers snacking, nibbling and full-on dining. Never dull.
The Abbey the best Gay bar??? oh plleeeaaasseee! Most of the men there are older, trying to hold on to their last days of youth. The place is as fake as the Housewives of the OC. The place is full of attitude and fake people.
The Abbey is a Joke as well as a mockery of the gay community, Why are you folks saying best Gay bar when it is NOT a gay bar and it is NOT gay friendly at all. If your fake and stuck up and in the closet and lie about everything and have a lousy attitude then this is the place for you.
There aren’t enough drink tickets in the world to get me in there again. All attitude and overplucked, bronzed men and their straight women friends. If you’re visiting Los Angeles, try Akbar on the East Side. Much friendler with engaging, interesting men who’ll actually say hello instead of rolling their eyes at you as they walk away.
Seriously, it is hit and miss at this place, but mostly MISS, especially the atrocious service, thick with pretentiousness.
Ummm…so best GAY bar in the WORLD? As my friends say and I say too…don’t you have to be a Gay Bar first and foremost to win the title? I mean really…they haven’t been a gay bar or gay friendly since David Cooley sold to SBE; didn’t anyone see the exodus of gay bartenders and patrons when that happened? And speaking of that…what’s this business of a straight corporate owned bar doing by hiring straight bartenders masquerading as gay – the gay community needs to realize that they are being completely undermined by tipping a straight bartender. Keep the tips and the money within your own community I say…the straight community isn’t giving anything to us! Look at the recent support of gay marriage by the straight community – does Prop 8 ring a bell? And still our community supports venues such as this place who call themselves “gay friendly”! Think about it..
The greatest!
the last few times I had dinner there I got diarrhea!!!
I love The Abbey. It is a great spot to just hangout with your friends and have a great time. However, The Abbey no longer promotes itself as a GAY BAR. If it is in the running for the greatest gay bar in the world, well then for this place it just isn’t the case.
LOVE THE ABBEY! GREAT MUSIC HOT PEOPLE BIGGEST COCKtails IVE EVER SEEN.
WEST HOLLYWOOD
Simply the best, consistent, most fun bar that I goto the most and bring the most beautiful people.
I used to think that The Abbey was the best gay bar in the world and raved about it to everyone that would listen. Over the past two years, it has become overrun with straight people – especially packs of women, who don’t seem to care if they’re blocking the “loop” or accidentally bumping people with their monstrous handbags – I think they need gay best friends who can teach them a thing or two about “clutches” vs. “shoulder bags” for a night out.
The Abbey is still a fun place to go on weekend afternoons, but it is most certainly not the best “gay bar” in the world. Plus, the overpriced “table/bottle service” is ridiculous to have in a gay bar. It works in straight bars, where straight guys have to pay for a table so their women have a place to sit down, but we don’t need that kind of thing in a gay bar. By the way, straight people – if you’re reading this – there is a terrific bar across the street from The Abbey called “Apple.” You’ll love it there. It’s upscale, classy, and fun!
Nowadays, Eleven is probably the most popular gay men’s bar in West Hollywood on Friday nights, and Here Lounge is much better than The Abbey for gay guys on Saturday nights or early Sunday evenings. And don’t forget the newly renovated and reopened Micky’s! It regularly draws a large crowd of fun-loving gays.
For this reason, I’m voting for SideTrack in Chicago, even though I live right next to West Hollywood.
For those of us gays who don’t live in West Hollywood, the Abbey is still a gay bar. Very fun with great drinks and decent food. But yes, there are more bacheloret/girls nights and most the staff is straight, so they say. Which I find odd, being that the Abbey is located in West Hollywood. What’s up with that Abbey?
THE BEST DOORS ARE OPEN TO “EVERYONE” IF YOU WANT TO MEET AND MAKE FRIENDSMM THIS IS THE PLACE FOOD IS AWESOME A PLACE THAT YOU WILL NEVER FORGET.
I sure wouldn’t call The Abbey a ‘gay bar’ anymore. Since SBE took over, they have done a very good job at trying to make this a non-gay bar. I have not been in a place that has so many ‘bacheloret/girls night’ out events in all of LA. Much of the gay staff has been eliminated, and straight staff put in their place. Although still somewhat friendly, NOTHING like it use to be. It was WAY more fun when David Cooley was running it without the corporate SBE.COM whose ONLY goal is to make money, service/friendliness be damned.
This is my favorite place for lunch. The food is still really good and it’s a nice environment, nothing like the insanity this place turns into at night… which honestly can be a bit much.
