Sydney
Gay Friendly Rating:
Very welcoming; this place is gay-tastic!
The Opera House. The Harbour Bridge. Shirtless, buff men gyrating at Mardi Gras. Bring it on, Sydney!
Sydney Fast Facts:
- Gayborhood Sydney's main gay strip is on Oxford Street, just southeast of the CBD and clustered around the Darlinghurst and Surry Hills neighborhoods.
- Sydneyside Up! Residents of Sydney are called "Sydneysiders," fyi.
- Local Lingo The Australian equivalent of "How you doing?" is "How you going?"
- Hotel Hunch In Sydney, sometimes the word "hotel" refers to an establishment known mostly for eating and/or drinking. Sometimes it just refers to a hotel. With time, you get to know which is which.
- Food Facts In this city of foodies, the Good Food Guide published annually by the Sydney Morning Herald is the bible. (http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/good-living/good-food-guide/)
- Gay 411 For further information about gay and lesbian listings and events, visit the Pink Guide or Gay & Lesbian Tourism Australia. The magazine Lesbians on the Loose has a Sydney edition. For information about and tickets for Sydney's Mardi Gras, visit http://www.mardigras.org.au.
- Card Trick If your time is limited, the handy See Sydney Card gives you discounts for two days' worth of activities, but you may have to scramble to make it pay off. If you prefer to linger, individual tickets are available.
- Don't Drive. You don't need - or probably want - to rent a car in Sydney. If you're staying in the city center, you're within about 30 minutes' walk of everything, taxis are reasonably priced, or a system of buses, trains and ferries will take you anywhere you want to go. A day pass for all local transit costs $15, an especially good deal if you plan on taking ferries.
- Fly Qantas Qantas is Australia's premier airline, of course. They can get you to Oz in classic style. After all, they've been flying the GLBT community to Australia, Sydney Mardi Gras and New Zealand for decades. Visit http://qantas.com.
It's pretty hot down under, that's why we've nominated Syndey for "Best Global Desination" and Sydney Mardi Gras as "Best Annual Gay Destination Party or Event" in the 2009 Gay Travel Awards.
