Portland Fast Facts:

  • Gayborhood There's no specific gay 'hood, however, many gay bars are clustered around Stark Street and Third Avenue. Plus, it's home to a high percentage of gay and lesbian families. And you've heard of gay mayor Sam Adams, right?
  • The gay clubs fall on the seedier side of the tracks (nude go-go boys aren't shocking here and there's a bathhouse attached to Silverado). And while the gay boys and girls like to party down at their clubs, If you want some class with your cocktails, your best bets are to hit the restaurant/lounge scene, which are generally open till 2pm.
  • City blocks are about half the size of the national average, making Portland a great place to walk. The public transportation is lauded as one of the country's best (it's free downtown), but it would make life a lot more convenient to rent a car. The locals love to freak out about parking, but don't let them fool you - it's not as bad as they say.
  • Coffee is a way of life in Portland and there seems to be a coffee shop every 15 feet. They're all pretty good so don't waste your time with the Starbucks every other 15 feet.
  • There's no tax what-so-ever in Portland so shop away!
  • Travel Portland is a member of the IGLTA, the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association, which supports and promotes LGBT travel around the world.
