Oslo Fast Facts:

  • Gayborhood In 1981, Norway became the first country in the world to enact a law to prevent discrimination against gay people. Thusly, Oslo is as liberal and welcoming as any queer globetrotter could want.
  • Norway is hella expensive, so be sure and investigate prices at bars and restaurants before you throw down the plastic. For exmple, a beer at a fancy hotel bar can be as much as $10, while local dive bars are much cheaper. $1 equals about 7 Norwegian Kroner.
  • Norway is known as the land of the midnight sun, so depending on what time of year you decide to visit you'll either be getting lots and lots of daylight or lots and lots of dark. The sun does not set between the middle of May and end of July; conversely the sun does not rise between the middle of November and the end of January. Plan accordingly.
  • The Oslo Pass provides free travel on all public transport, free admission to museums and sights, free parking in all Oslo municipal car parks, and a variety of different discounts at things all around Oslo. You can buy passes that are good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. Prices range from $33 to $60, making them totally worth the price.
  • Active in Oslo (http://www.aktivioslo.no/english.html) is a website with a rundown of current events (music, theater, art, sports, etc.) happening in Oslo. A good place to start scoping things out.
  • The official English language site of the Oslo Tourism Board is http://www.visitoslo.com/. It's got handy info, including a "Gay Oslo" section.
