New York
Gay Friendly Rating:
Very welcoming; this place is gay-tastic!
NYC may just be gayest city on earth, especially when June rolls around and Pride takes over. Come celebrate in the city where Stonewall started it all!
New York Fast Facts:
- Gayborhood There are gay people and venues all over town. In NYC being gay isn't an issue, it's a birthright! That said, the most obvious gay 'hoods are Chelsea, Hell's Kitchen, the East Village, the West Village and Williamsburg in Brooklyn.
- Welcome to NYC Arriving at JFK Airport? The AirTrain/Subway service can get you to Manhattan for a few dollars, but it'll take about 90 minutes. Taxis are likely faster, but from JFK it's $45 plus tip; a just a bit less from LaGuardia.
- Bars 101 Pick up a local bar mags to find out what's on party-wise! Next is the weekly for boys. Go NYC is for lesbians.
- "House-ton" We Have a Problem That big street downtown that looks like a Texas city name? You'll recognize it as Houston Street. But it's pronounced "House-ton." It's weird, but true.
- Follow the Rainbow This summer it's all about the 40th anniversary of Stonewall, so expect Gay Pride in NYC to be bigger than ever. NYC & Company's Rainbow Pilgrimage site is a fab resource for everything that's happening in gay NYC. Check it out!
-
Shopping, clubbing, and culture; Gotham City boasts it all. New York was recently voted Best US Destination in the 2009 TripOut Gay Travel Awards. - Go Underground If you're going to be in NYC more than a few days, use the subway to get around! Buy the weekly pass. It's a good deal. 7-days of 24/7 travel underground for $25. For more info, head to http://www.mta.info/.
The NYC & Company is a member of the IGLTA, the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association, which supports and promotes LGBT travel around the world.
