New Orleans Fast Facts:

  • Gayborhood The city that schooled Tennessee Williams still offers gay fun after hours. Bourbon Street's got its gay showplaces, but fun homo nights abound all around town.
  • Tennessee Williams immortalized them and yes, they are still a way to get around in New Orleans - streetcars. If you want to rent a car, parking is very limited in the French Quarter, but parking garages exist on Canal Street and in the larger hotels. My suggestion is to avoid renting a car unless you're heading to other areas of Louisiana. You can always catch a cab - tons exist and a cab from the airport to downtown is about $28.
  • The most famous neighborhood of course is the French Quarter, sometimes called the Vieux Carre, literally French for "Old Square." As we all know the French Quarter is for partying, not for old squares, so it can be a noisy place during events like Mardi Gras. Bourbon Street is the balcony adorned main drag where come Mardi Gras, you'll see hooters and dicks galore, all for the payment of a few cheap beads. Where Bourbon hits St Ann is the gay corner with several gay bars, a few of which we list. Downtown is just outside of the French Quarter, with larger hotels and shops, especially along Canal Street. A really charming neighborhood is uptown and the historic Gardens District which might remind you a little of Savannah, if of course, you've been there.
  • Get some beads and more in New Orleans, nominated for "Best U.S. Destination" in the 2009 Gay Travel Awards.
