Minneapolis Fast Facts:

  • Gayborhood For the gay visitor, Minneapolis makes for a great Midwestern getaway, easily filling a long weekend (or longer) with great shopping, good eats, fun arts and crafty culture, and a zippy gay scene that’s friendly, funky and fun.
  • On the campus of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and housed in the Elmer L. Andersen Library, The Tretter Collection in GLBT Studies (http://www.trettercollection.org) is a massive (over 25,000 pieces) assemblage of items of relevance to the GLBT rights movement. Documents, T-shirts, posters, magazines, artwork, audio recordings, CDs, swizzle sticks-it's our entire history as a work-in-progress. You can even arrange your own tour of the collection, if you contact Jean-Nickolaus Tretter at least a few days in advance.
  • Mary Tyler Moore is still turning the world on with her smile. Go ahead, throw your hat up in the air next the this statue of America's favorite 1970's sweetheart, Mary Richards (http://www.glbtminneapolis.org/thingstodo/mtm_icon.asp), right outside of Marshall Field's on the Nicollet Mall.
  • A great way to get to Minneapolis is via the city's hometown airlines, Sun Country Airlines (http://www.suncountry.com ). Fly direct to Minneapolis from all over the U.S. (and the Caribbean and Mexico).
  • Lavender Magazine is the local guide to all that's gay and going on (http://lavendermagazine.com). Or get started online by checking out GLBT Minneapolis (http://GLBTminneapolis.org).
  • Wanna get hitched? Yes, if you want to have your commitment ceremony in Minneapolis, the city's official tourism office will help you plan the whole she-bang-for free! Yes, GLBT Minneapolis (the queer-specific branch of Meet Minneapolis, the city's visitors bureau) will have their commitment ceremony/wedding expert Sheila Marie, help you plan your event. First you fill out one form with your specific needs, then you'll be contacted by area hotels, ceremony sites, rehearsal dinner and reception venues with information on availability and rates. Get more info online at http://www.glbtminneapolis.org/ceremony.
  • Even with global warming, Minneapolis is pretty darn frigid in winter. But you can get around all over downtown via the city's totally cool indoor skyway system which links building to building. Check it out! (http://minneapolis.org/travelinfo/skyways.asp)
  • Sure, they may be getting a drink at Pi or The Town House, but your best bet to find all the city's queer females is to head to a Minneapolis Lynx game (http://www.wnba.com/lynx/index.html). The season runs May - September.
  • Locating an address in downtown Minneapolis while driving can be an excruciating experience, between the one-way streets and frequent, and seemingly random, no-turn signs. Get good directions if you're motoring around!
