TripOut Gay Travel:
Miami
Gay Friendly Rating:
Very welcoming; this place is gay-tastic!
America's coolest tropicial city grows up, but stays young, gay (and casual) at heart.
Miami Fast Facts:
- Gayborhood South Beach, of course.
- Never under estimate the power of the sun. Miami is hot and bright. It's possible to get sun burnt in an hour. Sunburns are not only painful, but the mark of a true Miami neophyte.
- Dress casually in daylight, but elegant in the evening. Miami is the capital of fashion below the Mason Dixon Line, so dressing light and casual does not mean letting yourself go. Shorts and sneakers at night are a big tacky no-no! However, untucking your shirt, and removing your tie will go a long way to help you fit in.
- Gay Key West may be a 4-hours' drive from Miami, but the rest of the Keys are just a hop skip and a gay jump away. If you haven't been before, check out their breezy charm and historical quaintness for a day trip.
- Miami is exceptionally diverse, even by NYC standards. When it comes to nightlife, Miami's bars are much more racially mixed than NYC, Paris or LA's. Don't act surprised when you encounter this.
- Miami is surrounded by water. Getting out on it enhances any visit. Boat rentals and tours are ubiquitous throughout the city, while jet-ski and wave runner rentals offer a fun alternative to getting waterborne.
- The Miami area is spread out. Renting a car (or scooter) is pretty crucial to getting the most out of the city.
The Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau is a member of the IGLTA, the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association, which supports and promotes LGBT travel around the world.
