Memphis Fast Facts:

  • Gayborhood Gay life is centered round Midtown, home to Overton Park, hip bars, funky restaurants and the vibrant Cooper-Young festival every September.
  • During Memphis' two annual Elvis onslaughts (his birthday in January and the anniversary of his death August), hotels and motels are crammed to the brim, so get your booking in up to a year early if you want King and kitsch to feature on your itinerary
  • Most Memphis attractions are within easy reach of downtown. Call ahead for a Yellow Cab (901-577-7700 or 901-577-7777) - hailing them on the street is illegal, or hop on the charming vintage Main Street trolleys to the National Civil Rights Museum or South Main Historic Arts District.
  • The Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center is a good resource for finding out what's on the social schedule (http://www.mglcc.com). Their site offers a monthly newsletter, The Triangle Journal, and an events calendar.
