Maui Fast Facts:
- Gayborhood There are no gay bars or clubs in Maui, however there are numerous LGBT events planned on a regular basis. Visit http://mauipride.com to find out when and where.
- Be Prepared. Plan your day: the islands tend to be sunnier in morning than in the afternoon, when clouds are more likely to form.
- West is Best? When planning your stay keep in mind that the islands' western coasts are dry and sunny, while the eastern coasts tend to be rainier though still pleasant.
- Let the Sun Set Heading to the summit of Haleakala for sunrise? While most guide books and anecdotal advice suggest visiting at sunrise, many residents and folks in the know suggest visiting at sunset instead. Although there's more possibility of cloud cover you'll face less tourists and of course you get to sleep in.
- Fly Light. When travelling between islands skip the big jets and take a small Cessna 9-seater; they're less expensive and way more fun. Try Mokulele Airlines.
- Drink the Ocean. If you're a vodka drinker be sure to try Hawaii's own Ocean Vodk, which uses local deep seawater to create an excellent refined spirit. Also a portion of the profits benefit organizations that conserve ocean resources.
