Liverpool Fast Facts:
- Artful Dodging Liverpool thrives with contemporary art. London’s the Tate opened a multi-level sister gallery, Tate Liverpool. Bluecoat Chambers is home to gallery installations, festival exhibits, social gatherings, and live music and performance. And FACT is dedicated to cinema and multimedia works.
- Follow the Band - For a guided Beatles sites tour -- and for that matter, of former homes and the love nest of the band's gay manager Brian Epstein -- there are at least a couple you can easily Google online, or search via the official tourism website, Visit Liverpool.
- Culture Club As European Capital of Culture, 2008 saw plenty of art installations from a giant robotic spider that crawled through the streets and took up residence in a giant web to dozens of customized Super Lamb Banana statues, the city’s unique mascot. Created in 1998 as an artist’s precautionary statement about genetically modified food, check out www.superlambbanana.com for more about this strange yet cute lamb-banana creation.
- Fab Four Fundamentals The Beatles are, of course, Liverpool’s – and probably the entire Western civilization’s – most famous band. If stricken with Beatlemania, start with The Beatles Story museum and its Fab 4 Store, then move on to The Cavern, where you can pose with a statue of the young John Lennon and scan the impressive roster of artists who played here inscribed upon the brick wall, and Grapes Pub (25 Matthew Street), where the Fab Four used to down a few pints. Today, Paul McCartney makes the rounds every July, when he parties with the students at his elite Lipa Film School.
- Mersey, Sakes! Take the famous Mersey River Ferry and hear all about the city's past -- as well as the famed Merseybeat hit, "Ferry Cross the Mersey" by Gerry & The Pacemakers.
- Queer life Pick up or download free LGBT monthly publication 3SIXTY for the queer skinny, as well as publication OUT Northwest. And of course, official tourism website www.visitliverpool.com features all things Liverpool and Merseyside, while www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk is museums-specific.
- Door Jams Some gay clubs employ very hetero, gruff doormen (whom would easily fall into the unflattering category of chav) and occasionally hassle gays trying to get inside. Bringing a flirty girl with you often helps smooth the entry process – which many of the younger gays typically do.
- Be Bold - Bold Street is the hip shopping street, lined with fab shops from streetwear to sassy card and gift shops.
- Day Trip Southport is a seaside resort area, located just 40 minutes away by train. There are some interesting statues on the beach itself, and the region’s finest fish and chips can be had at The Swan.
- Sister City Manchester is a short train ride away from Liverpool - you can use the multi-day Britrail Flexpass to get there or anyplace else in the UK.
