Cardiff Fast Facts:
- A Small Town with Big Ambition For all things and resources Cardiff, first stop is the city's official Cardiff Tourist Information Centre (The Old Library, The Hayes. Tel: 0870 121 1258). Their website includes a dedicated LGBT resource page as well as Dr. Who and Torchwood (yes, Miss Nerds!). Website VIEW features current arts/entertainment listings from restaurants to nightlife to movies. Local Metro magazine, free on weekdays, includes a gay what's on section. For all the gay goods, check out Real Cardiff and Gay Wales.
- Torchwood, and the Most Famous Giant Stone in Wales Bisexual, immortal Captain Jack Harkness (the yummy, openly gay John Barrowman) and his polysexual crew chase all sort of aliens and multidimensional threats from their hidden base underneath the iconic Wales Millennium Centre off Cardiff Bay. No, it doesn't actually exist but that doesn't stop some overzealous/hopeful tourists from standing and jumping on the giant stone that serves as Torchwood's secret elevator entrance on the show.
- LGBT Mardi Gras (Welsh Style) If you're coming in late summer, get your pride on at the Cardiff-Wales Lesbian & Gay Mardi Gras.
- Queer Cinema Filmmakers and queer icons are honored and screen their work at the annual Iris Prize Festival. While the focus is short films, features also screen.
- Public Transportation Explore smaller Welsh nooks and crannies like Swansea via BritRail, which makes traveling throughout the UK easy with their multi-day FlexiPasses.
- From Dance to Indie Like a hip music blog come to life, late Fall's annual SWN Festival sees three days of next-big-thing music acts and art, from dance DJs to plucky indie folksters.
- Drink Up! Spirits aficionados should sample the local Penderyn Distillery’s Single Malt Whiskey and Merlyn Cream Liquor. And when you drink, toast as the locals do with a hearty “Iechyd Da!” (“to your health!”)
