Cairns & Port Douglas Fast Facts:

  • Gayborhood Cairns and Port Douglas are more crunchy, backpackers towns than gay enclaves, but no worries. LGBT folks are warmly welcomed, too!
  • Eat Bugs? Here on the north coast, "bugs" are not what you'd think. We're talking about Morton Bay bugs: small, deliciously tender lobsters. Yabbies are freshwater prawns
  • Trans Trout? If Nemo's mom had disappeared in the real world, his dad would have undergone a sex change. Clownfish fathers turn into females to take on the mother's duties.
  • Traffic Trauma Renting a car is a fine way to explore the region; rates are reasonable. But watch for the numerous traffic circles on the Captain Cook Highway and remember: traffic in Australia travels on the left. Alternatively, shuttle van services run throughout the region, though check the timing if you're planning to return late at night.
  • Love Lockdown Cairns has a lockout policy for clubs; clubs can stay open until 5AM, but new customers are not allowed in after 3AM.
  • Fly Qantas Qantas is Australia's premier airline, of course. They can get you to Oz in classic style. After all, they've been flying the GLBT community to Australia, Sydney Mardi Gras and New Zealand for decades. Visit http://qantas.com.
