Buenos Aires Fast Facts:
- Gayborhood There are no predominantly gay quarters or neighborhoods, although there are zones with larger concentrations (Barrio Norte, Palermo, San Telmo).
- Shopping is a must when you're down in Buenos Aires. Amazing clothes are cheap and housewares (rugs, artwork, tchotchkes) are cheap! Men who like colorful, stylin' casualwear should check out Felix (Gurruchaga 1670, Palermo Viejo; 54-11 4832-2994; http://www.felixba.com.ar). And the entire Palermo Viejo neighborhood is perfect for shopping amid bookstores, fashion joints and designer housewares. There's even a great soapmaker at Sabater Hnos (Gurruchaga 1821, Palermo Viejo, Buenos Aires; 54-11 4833-3004; http://www.shnos.com.ar) where a cool brother and sister team make blissful scented soaps that make great gifts back home. They even make little, same-sex gay soaps of boys/girls holding hands. Cute!
- Get to know Argentinian wine while you're in B.A. Great native reds like Malbec and Mendoza are cheap--and rich and fruity and satisfying.
- A fun B.A.blog is Trendy Palermo Viejo (http://trendypalermoviejo.blogspot.com). Despite the corny name, it's a festive hodge-podge of info about shops/eateries/what's on in this great neighborhood.
- To get the rundown on what's hot in gay Buenos Aires, you'll want to grab the local queer publications. NX (http://www.nexo.org) and Imperio (or the small gay guide Otra Guia) are availabe all over town. Check at newsstands or in gay bars. A handy online resource for gay Buenos Aries is The Gay Guide (http://www.thegayguide.com.ar). La Ronda (http://www.theronda.com.ar, produced by Pride Travel) is another great gay listings guide to Buenos Aires.
- Getting around Buenos Aires is pretty easy thanks to its extensive Metro system (yep, it's the subway) and via taxis, which are cheap and pretty much available for hailing on the street anywhere. The basic subway fare is 70 cents (which equals about 23 cents, U.S.). Pretty much any basic taxi ride around the city will only set you back $2 or $3. To be safe, opt only for the "radio taxis" that have little plastic light boxes on the roofs or in the front windows. For details about the subway system, head online to http://www.subte.com.ar.
- The gay Portenos are as diverse as the men in NYC, but they're also very hot! Green eyes, chocolate hair and dark skin. They all dressed they they just stepped off a sailboat; preppy and scruffy at the same time. And everyone was friendly and spoke seductive amounts of English. -Adam, 32, writer
- My favorite was Sucre; everything was luxurious, delicious and beautiful. I felt as if I had crashed the most expensive party and nobody had noticed! And the most amazing part of it was that I could totally afford to have whatever I wanted. - Juan, 35, actor
- From my apartment balcony in Palermo Soho I overheard the guitar serenades of a baby shower at a nearby cafe. The women attending where seemingly wealthy and well-dressed, but they all sang street music in passionate, Spanish voices. -Adam, 32, writer
- The falls at Iguazu were unforgettable. Not touristy in the way I had anticipated. Being allowed to get close to such a rush of water was surreal and hypnotizing. Like it said in the guidebooks, it is the place to commit suicide if you want a fabulous death. And really, who doesn't? -Julio, 31, advertising executive
