Berlin
Gay Friendly Rating:
Very welcoming; this place is gay-tastic!
Germany's thrilling capital is artsy, edgy, sexy and way too much fun.
Berlin Fast Facts:
- Gayborhood A huge gay club and bar culture thrives there, heavily on the "alternative" scenes and concentrated in Prenzlauer Berg in the northeast and Kreuzberg in the south.
- You've got to try a doner kebap-a mouth-watering lamb-filled pita that can be found in many of the Turkish-owned establishments around Berlin. Just look for the big spindles of turning meat.
- The underground (U-Bahn) and overground (S-Bahn) railway systems are both extremely efficient and the best ways to get around town. Tickets run on the honor system (and the same ticket can be used on all forms of public transport) so be sure you have yours on you in case a plain-clothed transit official makes his or her way into your car.
- The largest park in Berlin-Tiergarten-is also its prettiest. Perfect for a peaceful stroll in the wilderness right in the middle of the city, it's also where the crowds converge for the main Loveparade events.
- Quaint Kastanienallee in Prenzlauer Berg (Eberswalder Strasse stop on the U-Bahn) is jam-packed with hipper-than-dich cafes, restaurants, and clothing stores for the hipster Berliner in you.
- Germans are BIG on Christmas. Seasonal markets pop up all around town during the winter, but the biggest is in the city center (Mitte), where carnival rides, games, and gluhwein (hot spiced wine) abound.
- The two weekly Berlin gay guides around town are Du & Ich (http://www.du-und-ich.net) and Siegessaule (http://www.siegessaeule.de), both in German. Check them out for weekly events.
- Berlin Pride 2009 is June 27th. (http://www.csd-berlin.de/)
