Barcelona Fast Facts:
- Gayborhood Barcelona has a gay community so prospering that it claims its own "ghetto" (the bustling "Gaixample" district) as well its own beach resort town (Stiges) a half-hour train-ride away.
- Brush up on your Catalan! Even though most everyone in Barcelona understands and speaks Spanish and English, Catalan remains the native language.
- By American standards, Spaniards eat, drink and party late, sitting down for food at around 11pm and hitting the clubs as late as 3 or 4am. And this is on the weekdays!
- Barcelona is extremely walkable, but for quick jaunts across town the Metro is a quick, reliable alternative, as are taxis.
- Like California, Barcelona is blessed with temperate weather all year around. Summers are hot and perfect for hitting the beach, while winter can be rainy at worst. The best time to visit is Spring or Fall, when the temperature are just right and the tourists aren't out in droves.
- Barcelona was home to the 1992 Olympics. Both the Olympic Village at the Olympic Port and the Olympic Stadium up on the hill of Montjuic are must-sees. Catch the funicular up to the latter for some of the most breathtaking views of the city.
The Barcelona Tourist Board is a member of the IGLTA, the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association, which supports and promotes LGBT travel around the world.
