Bangkok: Hustle and Flow on the Chao Phraya River

Bangkok is a tropical city whose spunk exudes from a plethora of architectural gems, from ancient palaces to modern buildings and everything in between. Nestled in tropical gardens and along the Chao Phraya River, the city’s palaces and temples are a relaxing refuge from Bangkok’s hustle. For a more modern experience, the skyscrapers towering over Sukumvit Rd. offer the latest in hotels, restaurants and shopping. And of course, if red light districts are your thing…

If it’s calm you crave, then most every hotel and guesthouse offers a range of soothing spa treatments to ease your senses. This comes in handy after you’ve spent the afternoon being fitted for custom suits or bailing out on some bad bets you made at a kickboxing match.

The city has a very visible gay scene and it’s widely accepted for Thai men to explore their femininity. It’s not all ladyboys these days and a number of clubbing options have cropped up to fill Bangkok’s need for muscle. Gay nightlife is clustered around Silom Soi 2 and 4, which doubles as Bangkok’s financial center during the workday. The lesbian scene on the other hand is more private and revolves around closed parties in people’s homes. However, social norms in Bangkok are such that it’s just as acceptable for a straight guy to ogle female strippers as it would be for woman to do so. Talk about enlightened! So get your one dollar bills and head to Bangkok.
