Gay Friendly Rating: Gay Friendly Rating Tolerant and friendly; but be mindful about PDAs.
John Waters' hometown is a haven of mirthy, earthy charms. Good crabs are just the beginning.

Baltimore Fast Facts:

  • Gayborhood Although it is by no means an exclusively gay community, a number of Baltimore's most prominent gay bars are in Mount Vernon, and it is the center of activity during Baltimore's annual Gay Pride festival.
  • Getting around the harbor (say, from Fells Point to the Inner Harbor and back) can be done via Ed Kane's Water Taxis. It's not terribly speedy (but not terribly slow, either) and a fun way to see the city. The archaically named "Letter of Marque" tickets ($8 adults; $4 kids 10 & under) are good for all-day usage. And there are stops all around the harbor. http://www.thewatertaxi.com
  • If you're planning on sampling much of Baltimore's bar scene, you might want to consider staying in the Mount Vernon area, as that's where most of it is located. Grabbing taxis around town is doable (bars and restaurants will call for you), but the fares add up quickly. And while the town is pretty walkable by day (and there's handy public transport), at night some areas may be dodgy. So, while you don't need to drive around the city to get around, a car may come in handy.
  • Your best local guides to what's going-on gay-wise in Baltimore (apart from just asking a nice local) are going to be the local LGBT papers, Baltimore OutLoud (http://baltimoreoutloud.com) and Baltimore Gay Life (http://www.baltimoregaylife.com).
  • The Baltimore Area Convention and Visitors Association is a member of the IGLTA, the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association, which supports and promotes LGBT travel around the world.
