Antwerp Fast Facts:

  • Gayborhood Antwerp's known for its fashion and shopping -- and a hopping gay nightlife and leather scene. Clubbing is a tradition here and youâll witness partiers stumbling home as late as 8am the next morning. The city's small, so you can do it all.
  • Antwerp's brown cafes are an insider tradition and a must see. They're named for their smoke-stained ceilings and walls and laid back bohemian vibe. The cafes, not necessarily gay or straight, have historically been the haunts of the Flemish intelligentsia. Come here to hang out with aspiring writers and musicians.
  • Antwerp is fiercely Flemish. Though they speak French in nearby Brussels, don't even try it here. The Flemish-speaking culture is proud of its heritage, and though most people speak English, trying in French will only hinder your efforts and reveal the long-running inferiority complex and rivalry the Flemish have with their neighboring Gauls.
